Issue Printer

Summary of Issue Printer

This project builds a physical "issue bin" using an Arduino MKR1000 and a thermal printer. It connects to the GitHub API via HTTPS to fetch new issues from a repository, prints them on paper, and allows users to physically discard closed tasks by stacking them on their desk.

Parts used in the Issue Printer:

  • Arduino MKR1000
  • Thermal Printer
  • WiFi Shield 101 (mentioned as alternative support)
  • External 5V power supplier (min. 2A)
  • 3D printed enclosure parts (left and right)

Print Github issues on paper and stack them on your desk. Every time you close an issue and you can literally “bin” it!

Quick Solutions to Questions related to Issue Printer:

  • How do you access Github APIs?
All APIs are accessible at https://api.github.com/ and can be tested using a browser.
  • Can the MKR1000 connect securely to Github?
Yes, the MKR1000 supports SSL connections using the WiFiSSLClient object.
  • What library is needed to parse the JSON response?
The Arduino JSON library should be downloaded from the Library Manager.
  • Which library controls the thermal printer?
You must install the Adafruit Thermal Printer Library from the Library Manager.
  • Is the USB power supplier enough for the printer?
No, the USB power supplier is not enough; an external 5V min. 2A supplier is required.
  • How can you identify the RX wire on the printer?
If bought from the Arduino Store, the RX wire is usually blue.
  • What URL retrieves events for a specific organization?
    Use the format https://api.github.com/orgs/{organization}/events.
  • What tool is used to upload the code to the board?
The Arduino Web Editor is used to upload the sketch to the board.
